What do we consider in making admission decisions?
We evaluate four primary components of an applicant's background, in order to make an admission decision. Click each section below to read a description of the four competitive areas that are used to admit students to Tech.
High School GPA/ Rigor of Curriculum
We recalculate your high school GPA. We use a standard 4.0 grading scale, but only factor in the core curriculum courses (see below). For students taking AP, IB, or College level classes, we award an additional one-half point (0.5) for each course.
| Core Curriculum: | Grading Scale: |
| English (4 Units) | A = 4.0 |
| Math (4 Units) | B = 3.0 |
| Science (3 Units) | C = 2.0 |
| Social Science (3 Units) | D = 1.0 |
| Foreign Language (2 Units) | F = 0.0 |
Example: If you take AP English and make a B, we would award you 3.5 pts. Last year the competitive range (mid-50%) of high school GPAs was 3.67-4.04 . Visit www.admiss.gatech.edu/hs_trans/ for more information on high school transcripts and self reported academic records.
**One year of high school Chemistry is required for majors within the Colleges of Engineering, Sciences and Computing.
**All students that apply for freshman admission, must have at least one higher level math beyond Algebra II (Statistics does not count as a higher level math).
Standardized Tests (SAT/ACT)
Georgia Tech accepts either SAT or ACT test scores with no preference to one over the other. We will consider your highest section scores across all SAT and ACT test dates that you submit. Only your highest section scores in Critical Reading, Math, and Writing (for SAT), and English, Math, and Combined English/Writing (for ACT) will be considered as part of the final admissions decision. Each time you submit scores, Georgia Tech will update your record with your highest scores. View our score choice policy.
Below you will find the latest test date that will be considered in each round, if Georgia Tech is listed to receive your scores at the time you take the test.
October 1 Early Notification - through October
November 1 President's Scholar Deadline - through November
January 15 Regular Decision - through January
Georgia Tech's school code for the SAT is 5248, and the code for the ACT is 0818.
Competitive ranges (mid-50%) of SAT scores:
1920-2160
Competitive ranges (mid-50%) for students submitting ACT scores:
29-33

Leadership and Activity Record (Extra-Curricular Involvement)
In addition to evaluating your academic ability to succeed at Georgia Tech, we are also interested to know what you will contribute to the GT campus. In order to get a sense of your interests, passions, and personal background, we include this section of our application. Please list any extra-curricular activities you have been involved in outside of the classroom during your high school career (grades 9 through 12). This may include clubs, organizations, community activities, athletic and work/volunteer experience. We value not only your involvement in extracurricular activities, but even more significantly for demonstrated leadership and accomplishments. Please be as detailed as possible when filling out this section, highlighting your most significant contributions and activities.
Personal Essay
Georgia Tech is committed to building a community of students, faculty, and staff who demonstrate passion, diligence, creativity, and innovation. Our admissions committee asks that you write an essay, not just to assess your writing ability, but in hopes that we may learn more about you as an individual. With that in mind, we ask you to choose one of two topics listed on the application and write an interesting, unique essay. This should be an insightful and creative exposition that answers the question thoroughly. You should have this essay edited and reviewed. Essays are evaluated for both content and writing/grammatical skills. This portion of the application is very important as it gives the Georgia Tech admission committee a chance to learn more about you as an individual in a manner that statistics cannot convey.
