Director of Undergraduate Admission

Favorite Thing about Georgia Tech: The fact that we are who we've always been - a place committed to our motto of "Progress and Service" and "Improving the Human Condition." Whether you are a student, faculty, staff, or an alum-- that's an inspiring culture.

Favorite Place on Campus: The Tyler Brown Pi Mile. Named after a former SGA President who embodied "Progress and Service.

Favorite Place in Atlanta: The Carter Center. Incredible mission and great views of our city. It's an easy walk from the Beltline too.

Favorite Restaurant near Campus: Cypress Street Pint and Plate. Great atmosphere (sit outside, if it’s nice) and an easy walk to Tech Square. Sweet potato nachos, poutine, Southern fried chicken—what’s not to like?!

What I recommend to do while in Atlanta: Go for a run or walk on the Atlanta BeltLine. What started as a master’s thesis at Georgia Tech has revolutionized our city. Incredible views of the city, great restaurants, shopping and public art along the way.

Mary Tipton Woolley

Position:

Favorite Thing about Georgia Tech: The talent, innovation and drive present in faculty, staff and students all over campus.

Favorite Place on Campus: Bobby Dodd Stadium - where you'll find me cheering on the Yellow Jackets during football season.

Favorite Place in Atlanta: Centennial Olympic Park.

Favorite Restaurant near Campus: JCT Kitchen, Antico Pizza & West Egg Cafe

What I recommend to do while in Atlanta: Head to Centennial Olympic Park to visit the Georgia Aquarium, World of Coke and CNN Center. Be sure to check out the Olympic fountain water show, the skyline view and the yummy restaurants all around the park!

Ashley Brookshire

Position:
Regional Director of Admission - West Coast

Years at Georgia Tech: 4 as an Undergraduate Student and 8 in Admission

Favorite Thing About Georgia Tech: My favorite thing would have to be all of Tech's quirky traditions. Whether it's the Freshman cake Race, RAT Caps, or singing "I'm a Ramblin' Wreck" after every touchdown, Tech students are very proud of their traditions and love to keep them going strong!

Favorite Place on Campus: The Tech Tower Lawn is beautiful year-round, when you're studying in the sun during the Spring or playing in the snow during Winter. With both Tech Tower and Bobby Dodd Football Stadium adjacent to the lawn, it's easy to forget you're in the heart of Atlanta!

Favorite Restaurant Near Campus: Flip Burger is a great restaurant that is run by a Top Chef contestant. Their food is definitely one of a kind!

Favorite Place in Atlanta: Peachtree Street is one of my favorite parts of Atlanta. If I'm just driving through or going for a run, there's always so much going on with the restaurants, shops, and offices that line the street.

What I recommend to do while in Atlanta: If you have a few days to just be a tourist, I recommend getting a City Pass for Atlanta. You'll be able to visit the Georgia Aquarium, World of Coke, and Zoo Atlanta with a discounted pass. Even as an Atlanta native, I really enjoyed touring the city and getting a glimpse into a little bit of everything!

Chad Bryant

Position:
Senior Assistant Director

Years at Tech: 4.

Favorite Thing about Georgia Tech: The people. Everyone truly embodies the Institute’s motto of Progress and Service.

Favorite Place on Campus: Bobby Dodd Stadium. It is a great place to watch a football game with the Atlanta skyline in the background.

Favorite Place in Atlanta: Ponce City Market. Great food options with easy access to the Atlanta Beltline for a quick jog to Piedmont Park.

Favorite Restaurant near Campus: Fox Brothers BBQ.

What I recommend to do while in Atlanta: Visit Stone Mountain. You can hike to the top of Stone Mountain or on one of their many trails. Be sure to stay late and enjoy a great laser show.

Mikala Bush

Position:
Admission Counselor

Years at Tech: 1.

Favorite thing about Georgia Tech: Georgia Tech is committed to what it does best. You’ll find that our 35 majors are all so technologically focused and creates a unique academic and social experience for our students. Every experience on campus leads to solving a problem with this focus in mind and it really sets graduates apart when they leave for their next steps.

Favorite place on Campus: Tech Green is definitely my favorite spot on campus. The space connects Wenn Student Center and Clough Undergraduate Learning Commons where you can grab a cup of Starbucks or a bite to eat with friends.  It’s also lovely green space with hammocks for reading under the trees, a quad for campus events and food trucks for lunch every day!

Favorite Place in Atlanta: I love Piedmont Park! There is always an event taking place, whether a festival, 5K, or concert. You can always grab Atlanta’s famous King of Pops across the street (the best flavor is Thai Iced Tea).  On Sundays, it’s a wonderful place to sit on a bench and read in front of a lake or overlooking the midtown skyscrapers.

Favorite Restaurant near Campus: Negril Village is one of the best brunch spots in Atlanta but the food is just as good Tuesday through Saturday. Negril’s mixes Caribbean island flavor with a Southern twist.

What I recommend to do while in Atlanta: Pay a tribute to alumnus Ryan Gravel and take a stroll, run, or ride through the Atlanta Beltline – the fruition of his master’s thesis. There are plenty of fun outdoor activities to try as you make your way through the city (like rec soccer at sunset and yoga on Tuesdays) or stop through the Ponce City Market for dinner, shopping and games on the roof top.

Andrew Cohen

Position:
Associate Director, Guest Experience

Years at Tech: Less than 1.

Favorite thing about Georgia Tech: I love all of the traditions that exist on campus!  From the whistle blowing between classes to the Rambling Wreck leading the football team out onto the field, there are so many long standing traditions on Georgia Tech’s campus. My favorite tradition is when first-year students decorate their RAT cap.  Whether you are a current student or attended Georgia Tech 50 years ago, all students’ RAT caps are still decorated in the same exact way!

Favorite place on Campus: The Bill Moore Student Success Center, which is home to the Office of Undergraduate Admission.  This is where we welcome prospective students on a daily basis, when the come to visit campus.  It is always great to meet visitors who are traveling from all over to experience Georgia Tech firsthand.

Favorite Place in Atlanta: Ponce City Market has so many different food options, access to the Beltline and even has miniature golf course on the roof!  I just keep going back to try different food vendors.  (Krog Street Market is set up very similarly and also has great food options!)

Favorite Restaurant near Campus: Since I am originally from the Northeast, I have come to love authentic southern cuisine and there is no better place than Mary Mac’s Tea Room!  If you are visiting from out-of-town, you need to find time to make it to Mary Mac’s!

What I recommend to do while in Atlanta: The World of Coke, Georgia Aquarium and CNN Center are all great options if you want to hit some of the major tourist attractions in the city!  I also recommend spending some time on the Beltline or head to Piedmont Park.  I love the park because it reminds me of Central Park in New York City, which makes sense because the same landscape architect (Olmstead) designed both parks!

Senior Assistant Director

Favorite Thing about Georgia Tech: The amazing people that make up the Georgia Tech Community- students, faculty, staff, alumni, and my COLLEAGUES in the Office of Undergraduate Admission. We work hard to recruit and admit a very talented group of students each year, and to see these students come in as freshman, graduate, and then move on into the "real world," is the most wonderful thing to experience.

Favorite Place on Campus: Bobby Dodd Stadium at night - we have the BEST views of the Atlanta skyline.  My kids also love the CRC and the indoor water slide.

Favorite Place in Atlanta: The Westside!

Favorite Restaurant near Campus: YEAH! BURGER, they have great onion rings.  And you cannot visit campus without stopping by The Varsity.  I suggest you walk there from our office (to get some extra exercise, before you order a naked dog and a frozen orange).

Favorite restaurant in Atlanta: Sotto Sotto.

What I recommend to do while in Atlanta: Atlanta is made up of some great neighborhoods.  From the Westside, to Inman Park, Buckhead and the Virginia Highlands, there are many places to visit.  I would always recommend the Georgia Aquarium and the World of Coke, and if you have the time, the High Museum.  Last, but not least a Braves, Hawks or Falcons game.

Laila Flores-Cervantes

Position:
Senior Admission Counselor

Years at Georgia Tech: 4.

Favorite Thing about Georgia Tech: The people! My colleagues are very friendly, supportive, and truly live the Institute's motto: "Progress and Service." The students I have met are very nice, and they smile; happiness around campus is contagious!

Favorite Place on Campus: I have become fond of the Wenn Student Center & Stamps Student Commons because it has multiple restaurants, a little "convenience" store, and it houses the post office (I like sending postcards to my friends in Mexico and around the world!).

Favorite Place in Atlanta: I love to visit Piedmont Park all year around, there are always festivals going on in here almost ever weekend! On Saturdays I visit the farmer's market, and take a stroll through the Atlanta Botanical Garden. I am also very fond of the Virginia Highlands neighborhood because there are a lot of cute local shops. When I visit that part of town I like to eat dinner at Yeah! Burger and buy ice cream at Paolo's Gelato. The city of Decatur (nearby) is also a great place to go and explore the food and music scene. If you go I recommend to eat at Taqueria del SolVictory Sandwich Bar or The Pinewood and buy dessert at Butter and Cream.

Favorite Restaurant near Campus: The Canteen at Tech Square.

What I recommend to do while in Atlanta: I love art museums, so if you have the time I recommend that you visit the High Museum of Art, the Museum of Design Atlanta (MODA), and the Michael C. Carlos Museum. I also enjoy hiking, so you can visit the state parks (there are so many close by or a few hours away!) like Cloudland Canyon State Park and Amicalola Falls State Park.

Favorite thing about Georgia Tech: It sounds cliché, but Georgia Tech is unique in that the community is made up of people with different backgrounds and experiences. I love that students can come to collaborate and learn in an environment that continually encourages and pushes them to grow, not only as students, but as a person as a whole. What students learn in the classroom is balanced out by the experiences and memories they make by interacting with people they may not have met otherwise.

Favorite place on Campus: Clough Rooftop! The view of the Atlanta Skyline is beautiful and such a breath of fresh air during a busy day. It allows you to take in the majority of the city in one view.

Favorite Place in Atlanta: Georgia Aquarium. I go there every year for my birthday just to see the dolphin show and the beluga whales. If you ever visit, take a behind the scenes tour!

Favorite Restaurant near Campus: Fat Matt’s Rib Shack! It’s a bit further off of campus, but still within the Perimeter. The bbq ribs are amazing and fall off the bone!

What I recommend to do while in Atlanta: I recommend taking in the heart of the city as much as you can! Atlanta has so much to offer in terms of food, music, art, shopping, and more. Anything you do will have a lasting impression on you.

Favorite thing about Georgia Tech: This is a hard one to narrow down, but one thing that comes to mind immediately is the integration of technology in nearly every classroom experience. It teaches our students to think and do far beyond both in and out the classroom.

Favorite place on Campus: Tech Green instantly became one of my favorite spots on campus! I love being able to say that I work in a campus centered in a city yet surrounded by green spaces. You will find students and guest relaxing outside, a lineup of food trucks, hammocks and of course one or two footballs being thrown around.

Favorite Place in Atlanta: Little Five Points has become one of my favorite spots in Atlanta due to its artistic vibes, mom and pop shops and of course the great food selections.

Favorite Restaurant near Campus: Negril Village Atlanta.

What I recommend to do while in Atlanta: Spend a good portion of the day at Ponce City Market and if you’re into farmers markets, checkout DeKalb Farmers Market. DeKalb Farmers Market is truly an experience and it gives other farmers marker a run for their money!

Katy Beth Lockwood

Position:

Favorite Thing about Georgia Tech: The people. I get to work with amazing colleagues across campus that love Tech and fantastic students that are looking to make their soon to be alma mater proud. It's hard to find this kind of campus culture anywhere else!

Favorite Place on Campus: The Rooftop Garden at Clough Commons. It has a beautiful view of campus and is a great place to enjoy the sunshine.

Favorite Place in Atlanta: The Beltline! It is such a fun way to explore different parts of Atlanta and some quirky neighborhoods you wouldn't necessarily find on your own. Plus all the runners and cyclists are great inspiration to get moving:)

Favorite Restaurant near Campus: Octane Coffee Bar - their iced coffee is out of this world!

What I recommend to do while in Atlanta: Enjoy the outside! Explore Piedmont Park, wander around Midtown for lunch, or catch a Braves game. There are so many things to do and we have great access to them.

Favorite thing about Georgia Tech: Tech plays a major role in shaping the future. From new technology to innovative ideas I love the fact that faculty and students alike are a part of something great. They truly make a difference in the local community which further impacts the world.

Favorite place on Campus: I love the hustle and bustle of Tech Square but I also enjoy the quiet of places like Harrison Square.

Favorite place in Atlanta: Any of the parks! There is a lot to do in nature without actually leaving the city.

Favorite restaurant near campus: RA Sushi in Midtown is a go-to. I still need to venture out and try more local restaurants!

What I recommend to do while in Atlanta: Visit the Beltline, walk around downtown, and check out Piedmont Park. There is so much to do and see!

Katie Mattli

Position:
Senior Assistant Director

Years at Tech: 4.

Favorite Thing about Georgia Tech: Georgia Tech really surprises you. It is in the heart of Atlanta but the campus has so many green lawns and cozy spaces you almost forget until you look at the skyline. It is its own community with a thriving city as its backyard.

Favorite Place on Campus: I think I have a tie! The Kessler Campanile was instantly one of my favorite places on campus.  It is a bustling spot with students coming and going out of the student center, but you can tuck away under a tree and listen to the fountain, taking a quiet moment to think. I also love the Chihuly sculptures in the atrium of the Scheller College of Business.

Favorite Place in Atlanta: I love the DeKalb Farmers Market. You can be a tourist and wander through the aisles taking it all in, but the locals park their shopping carts on the left-hand wall and go through the hot food buffet. The food is incredible and filled with ethnic dishes.

Favorite Restaurant near Campus: Mary Mac’s Tea Room really celebrates Southern cuisine and is the real deal. Everyone talks about their peanut butter pie (and it is delicious!) but their peach cobbler is my favorite. Ask your server about celebrity sightings. They always have great stories about stars and famous politicians stopping by.

What I recommend to do while in Atlanta: The Fox Theatre is so iconic that I feel it is a “can’t miss” spot. I have seen some amazing productions there like The Phantom of the Opera and Wicked.

Favorite thing about Georgia Tech: Georgia Tech is the embodiment of passion without pretense. The achievement and innovation of the students, faculty, and alumni that call this campus their home never fails to amaze me, and the talent coming from every corner of this campus is inspiring.

Favorite place on Campus: Tech Square! As one of the first places that I ever visited on campus, Tech Square is a hub of student & industrial activity, innovation, and most importantly, FOOD.

Favorite Place in Atlanta: I’m a sucker for aquariums and the Georgia Aquarium is one of my favorites. I could sit in front of the large tank with the manta rays and whale sharks all day long, its surprisingly peaceful.

Favorite Restaurant near Campus: Bartaco or Antico.

What I recommend to do while in Atlanta: Ponce City Market is a great place to spend an afternoon! There are lots of great little shops, and the food hall is a great way to try something new and/or meet all the different food cravings of a large group all at once. Best of all, it’s located right on the Beltline, making it a wonderful place to start or end your adventures around Atlanta.

Favorite Thing about Georgia Tech: The fearlessness with which students go for their dreams.   They use their amazing math and science skills to solve problems right here on campus or across the globe.  It's fun to watch them, the dreamers.

Favorite Place on Campus: Tech Square. Where the campus intersects with the city of Atlanta, you can see students and local entrepreneurs enjoying the fun restaurants together.

Favorite Place in Atlanta: Zoo Atlanta is my favorite, with the extraordinary gorilla exhibit and the adorable pandas. Every spring, you can enjoy the new babies across the zoo.

Favorite Restaurant near Campus: Just because it's such an Atlanta tradition, I have to say The Varsity. Whether you're a visitor or a resident, you have to be able to say you've had a frosted orange and a peach pie.

What I recommend to do while in Atlanta: The Georgia Aquarium can keep you entertained for hours.  From whale sharks to river critters, it truly lives up to the hype of the world’s largest aquarium.  And when you step outside, you have quick access to all of the other downtown Atlanta attractions.

Favorite thing about Georgia Tech: The Georgia Tech community! Everyone you meet has a great story about how Georgia Tech has impacted them in the positive way. Progress and Service is at the heart of the community.

Favorite place on Campus: Harrison Square. There sits 2 statues of Rosa Parks. It’s peaceful and an great place to reflect.

Favorite place in Atlanta: Piedmont Park! A great place to hang out with friends and see a different side of Atlanta.

Favorite restaurant near campus: Ann’s Snack Bar. Great burgers and an Atlanta landmark.

Larry Stokes

Position:
Information Systems Coordinator

Years at Tech: 4 as an undergraduate and graduate student; 3 in admission

Favorite thing about Tech: I like that Tech offers a true campus experience and long-running traditions within the backdrop of a thriving urban space.

Favorite place on campus: The roof of the Clough Undergraduate Learning Commons. It offers a fantastic view of the city, it's planted with a variety of flora, and is home several hives as part of Georgia Tech's Urban Bee Project.

Favorite place in Atlanta: The Atlanta Botanical Garden is a true gem just north of Piedmont Park. A permanent exhibit at the garden mimics high elevation mountains in South America. On display there a number of rare orchid species.

Favorite restaurant near campus: Ecco in Midtown serves up great plates of continental European fare.

What I recommend to do while in Atlanta: Weather permitting, stroll down the Midtown Mile on Peachtree Street and check out the many shops, restaurants, and historic buildings and landmarks such as the Fox Theater. It houses the second largest theater organ in the world!

Katie Taylor

Position:
Assistant Director

Years at Tech: 4

Favorite Thing about Georgia Tech:  There are stories of every genre behind the buildings, people, and traditions encountered at Tech. The invigorating part is piecing them all together. I encourage you to learn about George P. Burdell, the father of football's Holy Trinity at Tech, and the Ramblin' Wreck.

Favorite Place on Campus: First and foremost, the iconic Tech Tower. But I also love the undergraduate admission office in the Bill Moore Student Success Center to the right of Tech Tower. When you walk in to register for a visit at Tech you will find our office overlooks Bobby Dodd Stadium, the oldest on-campus stadium in NCAA Division I-A. Yellow Jacket pride abounds from first setting foot on campus.

Favorite Place in Atlanta: Depends upon the season - and I am grateful we have four seasons in Georgia. Some favorite places include the Atlanta Botanical Garden and Your DeKalb Farmer's Market.

Favorite Restaurant near Campus: Gio's Chicken Amalfitano. You will likely hear someone mention the pizza at Antico, but my nod goes to its sister restaurant next door...I might change my mind upon visiting the gelateria by its side, Caffe Gio.  Giovanni Di Palma, the founder of this mix of establishments, is well on his way to creating his envisioned Piazza San Gennaro, inspired by the one in Naples. In his words, it is a "congregation point and destination for everyone in Atlanta" and everyone will soon be saying "Meet me at the piazza."

What I recommend to do while in Atlanta: Use Marta! It is very convenient to shuttle you around town to maximize your time in the city. Also, if you're flying in from out of town, have a biscuit and sweet tea at Bojangles - it is in Terminal T at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.

Alexandra Thackston

Position:
Senior Admission Counselor

Years at Georgia Tech: 4.

Favorite Thing about Georgia Tech: The camaraderie with the students and staff. Everyone here genuinely loves to be here. It's great to see everyone lending a helping hand around campus.

Favorite Place on Campus: The Rooftop Garden atop Clough Undergraduate Learning Commons. You can take in the best views of the city, while enjoying a cup of coffee or studying for exams. It’s a beautiful area on campus.

Favorite Place in Atlanta: Has to be the Atlanta Beltline from Krog Street Market all the way to Piedmont Park! It’s just over a 2 mile walk and you can see gorgeous views of the Atlanta Skyline, take in local art, check out trendy restaurants, and learn more about the city’s culture in a short couple of blocks. Best time to go is in the Fall when it’s getting cooler outside.

Favorite Restaurant near Campus: Most of the restaurants in West Midtown are great! However, I recently have developed a love for Eclipse Di Luna in Miami Circle. They offer Spanish Tapas that are delicious!

What I recommend to do while in Atlanta: Definitely stroll down the Beltline if you have the time! Otherwise, I would encourage you to check out a Braves game or ATL United Soccer game, enjoy the roller coasters at Six Flags Over Georgia, explore the culture of Atlanta through Buford Highway Farmer's Market, or catch a show at the Fox Theatre. There are endless amounts of activities to participate in while in Atlanta.

Favorite thing about Georgia Tech: The people!  Diverse, brilliant, and FRIENDLY!

Favorite place on Campus: The Hinman Research Building, which is home to The College of Design. This 35,000 square foot facility successfully blends the old with the new.  Much like the Institute, it has served a variety of purposes and has had to rise to the occasion of the times. Even if Architecture is not your intended major, do drop by this dramatic, award winning facility which originally opened in the 1930’s and was renovated and reopened in 2011.  It has captured prizes in Architect Magazine, Building Design and Construction Magazine and Interior Design Magazine to name a few.

Favorite Place in Atlanta: Bobby Dodd Stadium! Go Jackets!

Favorite Restaurant near Campus: Marlow’s Tavern on West Peachtree, introduced to me by my cousin Kevin (class of ‘89). Also Baraonda which is right next to The Fox Theatre.
