AI Use in Undergraduate Admission

For many students, applying to college can be overwhelming. To make this process more efficient, student-centered, and accessible, Undergraduate Admission is strategically implementing artificial intelligence across its work. See below how AI is, and is not, utilized in our process as well as advice to students.

AI tools are not used to make admission decisions; they only assist in gathering necessary information to evaluate applications.

A partner project with the Registrar’s Office uses machine learning to support transfer equivalency evaluations. Historically, this process required a manual review of transcripts and course information. By using years of existing data, machine learning helps identify transfer equivalencies faster and supports the development of institution-specific databases.

AI and machine learning also assist with high school transcript evaluation to help identify key academic information, such as the number of college-level courses a student has taken, or whether a student has satisfied the University System of Georgia’s required high school curriculum. Previously, this information was located and transcribed manually.

AI agents assist our customer service team, including a website, email, and phone agent. These agents allow students to get answers to common questions at any time of day or night, and more complex questions are elevated to an admission staff member during office hours.

Advice for Students

AI tools can be powerful and valuable in the application process when used thoughtfully.

Essays

We believe there is an opportunity for them to help you refine your ideas, but your ultimate submission should be your own. As with all other sources, you should not copy and paste content you did not create directly into your application.

Instead, if you choose to utilize AI-based assistance while working on your writing submissions for Georgia Tech, we encourage you to take the same approach you would when collaborating with people. Use it to brainstorm, edit, and refine your ideas.

Contribution to Community

AI can also be a useful tool as you consider how to construct your information in the Contribution to Community portion your application. AI can be a helpful collaborator, particularly if you do not have access to other assistance to help you complete your application.
